An Americano must be one of the blandest coffees around. It’s a shot of espresso drowned in water. This is the reason I usually go for brewed coffee, even though I would prefer something espresso-based. The brewed coffee, especially if it’s the earthy dark roast bold blend kind, will usually hit the spot for me. Unfortunately, it’s rarely that kind, and often stale.
I’ve found a solution to a better Americano: request the barista to fill the cup only halfway with water. For one shot of espresso, the half-cup of water is just about right. This works for me, and is worth the trouble of getting a quizzical look. Either that or pay for an added shot of espresso (as if it wasn’t expensive enough in the first place).
